This was my second time seeing The Offspring in concert, and as awesome as the first performance was it doesn’t compare to what I experienced at the Warped Tour ’05 in Vancouver, BC.
Once inside the gates I had to tend to my vast number of missions. Mission #1 – Locate the Myspace Warped Booth and ask for the time The Offspring would be signing autographs. I was the first to inquire about the time so I had to wait a couple minutes before it was finalized. Mission #2 – To seek and find when and where The Offspring were playing. This happened to be a harder mission then I thought it would be. Not many people were helpful to my quest. It certainly didn’t help matters that I didn’t know there was more to the Stadium. Doi! I ended up returning to the Myspace booth for the time and stage information, but still had to ask the Fox booth where the stage was. Phew! Mission #3 – Once I realized I had an hour before the Myspace signing session, I went and found the Offspring merchandise tent. The first time around I ended up buying 4 shirts and came back a couple more times for 1 more shirt, a sticker, and some pins. I contributed just over $100 to the Offspring Merchandise tent that day!
I got in line for the Offspring signing session just before one o’clock. Even though I had been hanging around the tent for more than ½ an hour before the line-up started, I ended up being 8th or so in line. I am just happy I wasn’t at the end of the mile long line. When “the boys” showed up it was about 1:20, and I was started clicking away on my camera ASAP! They are all defiantly a very cool and down to earth bunch of people (as I had expected). They all act very level with their fans (brownie badge!) I got them to sign a white Offspring tank-top, the Offspring Greatest Hits album cover, the Splinter album cover, and a sticker sheet (which was supplied at the booth). My friend gave me his Warped Tour ticket that he got signed as well as a Canadian $5. My brother got a ticket signed as well, but he decided to keep it. I got a picture of Dexter waving at me and a shot of Noodles and Greg together – according to Noodles he “loves Greg” – I felt bad that I missed a shot of Atom and Higgins and I don’t even have an excuse..i’m a poo and I’m sorry. (but I did happen to get random pictures of everyone signing other peoples autographs. Ha!) My brother got Noodles to sign his “boob” as well.
Noodles: “Serious?” Matt: “Yes” Noodles: “You mean on your shirt?” Matt: “No”
Then my brother lifted up his shirt and exposed himself to poor Noodles. It was quite something. This experience made my brother -- who only loves rap music -- go and buy an Offspring 2005 tour shirt. It was unbelievable. The autograph stayed on his chest for about a week. I captured a photo of Noodles signing his chest too, it is very rad. The whole signing session was a very exciting experience for me. I also made a point of talking to some other big Offspring fans like myself. That was very fun and exciting. Thank-you to The Offspring for sitting there for an hour and signing autographs for all your fans! Hopefully your hands were not in too much pain after.
The Offspring played their set around 3:00 pm. The show was incredible! They all played with so much energy and Dexter’s vocals blew me away. The whole set sent lots of energy to the fans below; I hope the band felt the same way. The song they played from the Offspring vault was “Nitro (Youth Energy)” (good choice). Noodles also got a lot of nice jokes in there, as usual.
I wish the set could have been longer, but I am not going to complain. They put on a wonderful show! Thanks again guys!
Some extra excitement for the day happened just before we were about to leave. My brother spotted Dexter with the bands tour manager going behind the gate to meet up with the rest of the band and greet some people from a radio station. I happened to have a letter I wanted to give to the band members. My friend asked the security guard if we could go in and give them the letter, since they were all standing right there. After a couple minutes of staring at the letter the guard decided to let us in (we didn’t look like too much of a threat). When I reached them, the tour manager asked me if I was from the radio station. I said “No, but the guard over there just let me in”. He said “Ok, well here are the guys”. He was a very nice, easy-going guy. I gave my letter to Higgins, because he was the only one not pre occupied at the moment. He asked if I was a fan of The Offspring, I told him I was a big fan. We talked for a few minutes about my letter. When we were done Higgins said, “Well, I’ll go and give this to the singer.” He walked over and gave my letter to Dexter; he told him that I was a big fan. Dexter looked at the letter then at me and said “Anthrax?” Then he put his hand out and I shook his hand. We talked for a couple minutes. When I was done the tour manager asked me if I got everything I needed, so I thanked him and then thanked Dexter and Higgins. I wish I had film left in my camera!
My brother and my friend were eager to leave, since we had already been there for about 7 hours. I was disappointed not to see Billy Talent and The Transplants, but I saw what I came to see and did what I came to do. I may not of been front row like I was at FoxFest but the whole Warped experience was a million times better!
